Durham County Library to Host Visioning Sessions for Stanford L. Warren Branch Library Renovations

Durham, NC — Durham County Library is pleased to announce its hosting of two public forums to envision the renovation of Stanford L. Warren Branch Library. Temporarily closed in August 2021 due to water intrusion issues, Stanford L. Warren Branch Library is set to undergo extensive repairs and a renovation of its interior.

The two visioning sessions will be held in Main Library’s auditorium located at 300 N. Roxboro St. in downtown Durham. Both sessions are to be held on Wednesday, June 8th, the first from noon until 2 p.m., and the second from 6 to 8 p.m. Durham County Library welcomes all members of the community to share their thoughts, receive information, and provide input on the renovations of the interior of the building. RND Architects of Durham will be performing the repairs and will attend both sessions to field questions from the public. Advance registration is not required.

“Stanford L. Warren is among the most historic buildings in Durham,” said Tammy Baggett, Library Director. “We are excited to receive feedback about how this branch will serve the public for decades to come.” Stanford L. Warren Branch Library became the new home of the Durham Colored Library in 1940. The Durham Colored Library opened to the public in 1916, only the second Black library in the state of North Carolina.

Durham County Library encourages discovery, connects the community, and leads in literacy. As a department of Durham County Government, the library furthers Goal 1 of the county’s Strategic Plan by enhancing cultural, educational, and creative opportunities.
