Durham County Library’s Stanford L. Warren Branch to Reopen Following Extensive Renovations

Durham, NC — Durham County Library is proud to announce that the historic Stanford L. Warren Branch Library located at 1201 Fayetteville Street will reopen on December 12, 2024, after undergoing over three years of renovation work. During the period of closure, structural repairs to the building and extensive upgrades to the library’s interior took place. Stanford L. Warren will also open with new furniture, shelving, and amenities.

The Stanford L. Warren Branch library’s history began with the founding of the Durham Colored Library in 1916 as only the second Black library in North Carolina. The branch library got its name when a local doctor, Stanford Leigh Warren, provided funds to purchase the building at the library’s current location in 1939. Stanford L. Warren became part of Durham’s newly integrated public library system in 1966.

“It took a lot of work, but I’m proud to say that Stanford L. Warren will soon reopen to the public,” said location manager Larry Daniels. “My team and I have big plans for our revamped library location, so be sure to come visit us to see all we have on offer.”
