Monday through Saturday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Closed Sunday. Check the library’s holiday schedule for closures. No appointment required although some material is stored offsite and requires advanced notice to view. Please note: The North Carolina Collection’s hours differ from those of Main Library.

The North Carolina Collection is located at the top of the monumental staircase on the third floor of Main Library. Elevators are available from the main entrance of the library.

Drop-ins welcome
No appointment is necessary, but we always welcome contact ahead of your visit so we can prepare materials ahead of time.
Please note that some material is stored off-site and requires prior notice to be made available in the reading room. Off-site materials are noted in the online catalog as “NC Archival Material – Off-site Storage”. Contact North Carolina Collection staff before your visit to arrange for your requested materials to be paged.
Registration
A library card is not required to use North Carolina Collection material and resources, but all customers in the reading room must register as users.
Policies and Procedures
In addition to following all Durham County Library policies, reading room users must agree to follow all reading room procedures, including but not limited to:
- Use of the room is restricted to North Carolina Collection-related research and activities.
- Pens are prohibited. Pencils and note paper will be provided upon request.
- Personal belongings such as backpacks, purses, computer cases, outerwear including coats and jackets, bags, or boxes of any kind MUST be stored in a locker.
- Food and drink are strictly prohibited. Water bottles with lids may be stored in lockers and accessed away from collection materials.
- Personal devices are permitted but must remain in silent mode. All phone calls must be taken outside of the NCC.
- Staff may restrict the duplication of any material if it is deemed too fragile or if the material has duplication restrictions.
- If sharing or publishing materials found in the North Carolina Collection in a public forum, please include proper citation.
