Laurel tiene una maestría en bibliotecología (M.L.S) de la Universidad Central de Carolina del Norte, el cual recibió en 1995 Desde entonces ha trabajado en dos sistemas de biblioteca diferentes en Carolina del Norte. Siempre le ha gustado leer y esta profesión fue una buena forma de combinar este gusto con su interés por trabajar con niños.
